MEEP - The MareNostrum Experimental Exascale Platform

MEEP is a new emulation platform that aims to create European chips and explores hardware/software collaboration designs for future exascale supercomputers. Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) will coordinate the MEEP RIA Project, and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM and UNIZG-FER will be partners in the project.

This Research and Innovation Action (RIA) Project consists of activities aimed at generating new knowledge, investigating the feasibility of a new or improved technology, product, process, service or solution.

Funding was provided by the Research and Innovation Activity (RIA) of the European Program to lead participation in the MEEP Project, which aims to create European chips and develop projects to monitor the resulting technologies.

The MareNostrum Experimental Exascale Platform (MEEP) Project supports EuroHPC's goal of creating competitive European technology for future exascale supercomputers. In particular, it aims to create an exploratory supercomputing infrastructure to explore the development, integration, testing and co-design of various European technologies that could form part of future European exascale systems based on European developed intellectual property (IP). The ultimate goal is to create an open full-stack (software and hardware) ecosystem that can underpin many other European systems, both high performance computing (HPC) and embedded computing.

MEEP brings together three EU partners: BSC (Spain) will act as a coordinator offering expertise in building infrastructure, providing software and hardware for target machines developing the European chip; UNIZG-FER (Croatia) will provide significant expertise in the installation and commissioning of architectural and FPGA-based systems, and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM (Turkey) will contribute with its deep expertise in validation, architecture and advanced logic design.

Peter Hsu, MEEP Director, said: “It is important for us to be the coordinators of BSC's key technologies in building, creating and deploying competitive technology that can reach the market and contribute directly to the evolution of society.” BSC's MEEP Coordinator, John Davis, said: “The MareNostrum Experimental Exascale Platform (MEEP) will form the basis for both HPC and many systems as a software development tool for performance evaluation and future chip designs at BSC.” states as.

MEEP is funded by the RIA program, a High Performance Computing (HPC) public-private partnership that pools the European Union (EU), part of the European High Performance Computing Joint Initiative (EuroHPC JU). This program includes activities such as basic and applied research, technology development and integration, testing and validation on a small scale prototype in the laboratory or in a simulated environment.

This project has received funding from the European High Performance Computing Joint Venture (JU) under grant agreement 946002. JU receives support from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program from participating countries such as Spain, Croatia and Turkey, as well as private stakeholders.
